BLESSINGS TO THOSE LIVING IN A COMING TO JESUS MOMENT,
It has been more than seven years now since I saw Larry. The first time I had a workman's comp. case with Larry representing the Respondents, we were both in front of Chief Judge Felter of the OAC on a hearing for my claimant's assertion that the employer was underpaying on the wage benefits due. I made a very short opening argument, and the claimant's testimony was short also. Then it was off to the races with exchanges of case law back and forth between Larry and Judge Felter. At one point Larry leaned over to the Claimant's table and said you are going to have a good day. I really was in over my head, and just dazed at the arguments being made to the well organized questions of Chief Judge Felter.
Years later after being stationed at hospitals all summer with multiple body parts failing, I came back to the law practice realizing that I was going to need to team up with good counsel for litigation cases. I was retained by a lady nicknamed Rocky who had injured her back at work, but the employer did not take the report until the next day. I reached Larry by phone and asked him to join me in what turned out to be a difficult case.
During the case we found that two of our key witnesses weren't available,
since one had left the state and the other coworker said she now couldn't remember the facts of the injury date.
Larry and I had a conference before the depo of the store representative, and Larry said it is going to be a “coming to Jesus moment”. At the time, I was a little offended that this Jewish lawyer was using this phrase, but I said nothing.
At the depo, things became heated, but Larry just remained his calm self with that special little smile of his showing on his face. Then to my surprise, I saw Larry use the phrase almost exactly to the deponent that had taken the rope and put it around his neck. Larry said words something like, “There comes a time when we all have a coming to Jesus moment.”
The deponent really had nothing more to say.
Here are three definitions I found:
Aug 27, 2018 … Outside religious contexts, come to Jesus refers to a meeting or moment where one undergoes a difficult but positive and powerful …
Larry in a conference with me after was asked, “What is this coming to Jesus phrase?” He started by saying that some of his Jewish lawyer friends would often joke with him on the elevator after court about these silly Christains. Larry said they didn't realize they were talking to one.
A Call to Persevere
…22let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds.… Heb. 10:23
