BLESSINGS TO THE FLOCK KEEPING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD,

Growing up on our little forty acre farm, my dad was doing three different jobs most of the year: 1. the hog packing plant in Storm Lake where he worked 10 hour days/6 days a week, 2. the farm work of raising cattle, hogs, corn, and alfalfa, 3. hauling gravel from our gravel pit which usually involved deliveries after dark and on Sundays.

Mr. M. showed up on our farm in the later 60s and said he had a deal for us.  Mr. M. would strip back the ground down to the gravel as it went north from the pit and pay us by the truckload.

Something went really wrong since Mr. M's construction company came in and started stripping all the top soil, but not down to the gravel.  The clay that went 10s of feet lower, M. Construction left.  When my dad confronted Mr. M. that he wasn't keeping the deal, Mr. M. said he was and kept on doing the same thing to more and more acres of the farm.  My dad went to see a lawyer and supposedly the lawyer said he wouldn't be able to help because there was no written contract. 

Years later, I saw Mr. M. as a defendant in a case while I was at Attorney Bill Perry's office where I clerked while I was in college.  Mr. M. was doing his same old scheme of saying I'm just 8th grade educated and this man is trying to take advantage of me.  The Court didn't buy Mr. M.'s pitch and held for Attorney Perry's client.

When we realize that we will all give an account before the sternest Highest Court, we better make sure we are asking for Mercy and not Justice.
