We all have a reference point for “the slap”.  It may be the most recent thing

seen on TV, it may be when someone slapped us in anger from what they perceived we had done.  I could tell you about Mary running me down on the gravel road many decades ago after I made some wise crack, but I can't remember today even what was said.

The natural thing to do when somebody slaps us is to hit back.

The slap that is remembered by Bible readers is this:

Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. “Is that the way to answer the high priest?” he demanded. Jesus replied, “If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I'm speaking the truth, why are you beating me?”
