BLESSINGS TO THOSE STANDING IN THE LIGHT,

It was shortly after 1963, that my older sister Connie started practicing in her room with the little blue suitcase turntable that our friend Patty had given to her. The song she planned to sing at the coming Nemaha School Recital in May was Blue Velvet. She practiced Blue Velvet so many times that us younger kids knew the song by heart also.

The May night of the big recital had finally come and all the family was dazzled

by the the blue cotton dress with long blue sleeves that our close neighbor

Elmaretta had made for Connie. When Connie walked out on the stage

another neighbor Shirley was accompanying on piano.

The way I remember it there were lots of cheers and applause after she finished

the song. On the ride home all the family was telling Connie she sounded

like a professional. I thought she would grow up to be a great singer.
