Blessings to Those laboring in the Field,
13 Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning. Leviticus 19:13
Over the years working in different fields of work including
weeding gardens, building fences, construction of grain elevators, packing house work for the slaughter of hogs, gas station attendant, feed company delivery, and then clerking for lawyers, and working for law firms, and then finally working for my own law firm, I noticed that different employers had different attitudes for the timely payment of wages.
As you can see there was a time when the laborer was paid at the end of the day's work. Over time the employers extended the time for payment from every week, to every other week, to payment once a month.
The one thing that bothered me with some of the employers was when it was finally payday it really wasn't. I would ask for my check by noon, and sometimes the explanation was the boss is out, but should be back by late afternoon to sign checks. There were even a few that would say, “Let me catch you next Monday.
I didn't get time to get to the checks today. “
Begging for a check that one has already earned is not the appropriate way to show brotherly love to your employees.
When it came to paying for work on our home we tried to be mindful of the scripture in The Book of James.
