When I was in grade school, I had to run 13 laps around the school building to prove I could do more than the rest of the boys in my class.  We then climbed about 14 steps to the 2nd story of Nemaha School and to the right down the hall to what I remember as Mrs. Hall's class.  As I sat in the back row, I could feel something very unusual happening in my head and in my chest.  I got up to tell the teacher in class, but as I walked down the row I felt myself falling and hit the wooden floor hard.  Kids were around me and some were saying, “Look how green he is turning.”

I would experience years of going to the Iowa Crippled Children's Hospital which came to many towns in Iowa.  I went to Univ. of Iowa where I had an arthrogram in 1967, and was told I could play football, but that I had an aortic valve leak, and would have to have it replaced in my 50s.

I have had two aortic valve replacements with pig valves since then, and this morning I had an echo at 7:30 a.m. and could hear my own heart splashing on the echo.

I thought I could have been gone in 2007 or 2015 or any date before those.

It is strange to me that we take our heartbeat for granted, and so many other gifts The Almighty gives us on an hourly basis.
